Could the Cigarette Ban in England Drive Bingo Players On to the Web?

A lot has been reported in the papers recently concerning the bingo industry being hit as a result of the anti cigarette law in Britain. Things have become so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has requested huge aid to help keep the businesses from going bankrupt. However can the internet adaptation of this traditional game offer a escape, or will it never compare to its land based kin?

Bingo has been an established game generally played by the "blue rinse" generation. For all that the game recently had undergone a recent return in popularity with younger men and women opting to visit the bingo halls instead of the bars on a Saturday night. All this is about to be reversed with the enacting of the anti cigarette law around England and Wales.

Players will no longer be allowed to smoke at the same time dabbing numbers. Beginning in the summer of 2007 all public locations will not be allowed to permit cigarettes in their venues and this includes Bingo parlours, which are possibly the most common areas where many people like to smoke.

The results of the anti smoking law can already be seen in Scotland where smoking is already barred in the bingo parlors. Numbers have plummeted and the business is literally fighting for its life. But where have all the players gone? Obviously they have not deserted this classic game?

The answer is on the net. Players realise that they can participate in bingo using their computer at the same time enjoying a drink and fag and still have a chance at big jackpots. This is a recent anomaly and has timed itself almost perfectly with the anti smoking law.

Of course playing on the net will never replace the collective aspect of heading down to the bingo hall, but for a group of men and women the governing edicts have left a number of bingo players with little choice.
